How a Bengaluru baker is keeping a 97-year-old family baking tradition alive

Priyank Sukanand has opened Bangalore Connection 1888 which specialises in old favourites from his great-great grandfather’s bakery, and new additions like macaroons and mousses.

bake-main

Karnataka News: In the heart of Bengaluru’s Shivajinagar, next to a tea shop and a grocery story that have long since closed their doors, there was once a bakery. Back in 1888, P V Kuppusawmy Naidu opened his own bakery on that block, serving butter and masala biscuits, honey cakes, chupam (a soft breadstick-like confectionary given to children), and decadent wedding cakes that climbed two and three tiers high.

Naidu’s bakery lived on for 97 years, run by three generations, fuelling a bakery culture that would become a timeless part of the city. Though it shut down in 1985, the legacy of baked goods for the family — and that Shivajinagar block — wasn’t over yet.

In December 2018, Priyank Sukanand, a Cordon Bleu-trained chef and the great-great grandson of the original Naidu founder, opened Bangalore Connection 1888, a production kitchen that specialises in sweet and savoury treats – from old Bengaluru bakery favourites (yes, he still makes those biscuits) to new additions like macaroons, doughnuts, cheesecakes, and mousses.

From Naidu Bakery to Bangalore Connection 1888

The story goes that Naidu’s wife learnt how to make bread from a British household where she worked, and taught her husband how to do it, too. Once he learnt the craft, he would sell his bread out of a basket at the railway station. Slowly, he learnt more recipes and saved enough money to finally open his bakery in 1888 — 10 years before the first Hassan Iyengar bakery, now ubiquitous throughout Bengaluru, is believed to have opened its doors. Read More → Bengaluru Baking Tradition

‘What about our losses?’: Uncertainty prevails at Vijayawada flood relief camp

The heavy outflow from the Prakasam Barrage on the Krishna River resulted in flooding of several low-lying areas in Vijayawada.

Andhra Pradesh News: Two groups of young children and older boys play their own forms of cricket at the centre of the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada, in the scorching heat on Monday afternoon. But the kids are not training at the stadium to play professional cricket. They are among the 1400-odd people who have been staying at the flood relief camp which has been set up at the stadium for the past four days.

On August 16,  Durga, along with her two children and most of her neighbors in Tarakarama Nagar, quickly packed a few belongings and got on a truck which brought her to the stadium. Durga says that although residents were warned about the possibility of floods, nobody expected it to be this severe. “The officials issued a warning on August 14 and 15. They came and announced the flood alert on mics. But the (Prakasam) barrage gates are opened every year. Some years, the water doesn’t even enter our homes. Other times, it’s just ankle deep. So we didn’t expect it to be this bad this year,” says Durga.

Many of the people staying at the camp say that their houses were completely submerged, with the flood water touching the rooftops. They recall that the last time the flood levels were this high was nearly ten years ago, when they were brought to the same stadium for shelter. The floods have mainly affected low-lying areas in and around the Krishnalanka area in the city, including Rani Gari Thota, Tarakarama Nagar, and Ramalingeswara Nagar.

Tamil_StandUpComedians

Tamil Nadu News: Tamil stand-up comedy is a growing platform in Chennai. While it is relatively new compared to English stand-up comedy, performing in one’s native language is surely finding a strong footing in the country.

A panel discussion titled “Madras Uncensored: Behind the phenomenal growth of Tamil stand-up comedy” organised as part of the Madras Musings-Chennai Heritage Lecture Series on Monday, acknowledged this expanding industry in the city.

Actor and theatre personality Vinodhini Vaidyanathan was in conversation with Annamalai L, Founder of Tanglish Comedy, comedians Jagan Krishnan and Guru Nicketan, on a range of topics from the origins of Tamil stand-up to the challenges they face with respect to language, censorship and more.

Going Tanglish

Annamalai founded Tanglish Comedy in 2016. When he started out, it was a movement of sorts in the Tamil stand-up comedy scene. The group meets regularly and invites new talents to perform for a small audience at select venues across the city. Over the years, their audience and talent base have grown phenomenally.

‘Kennedy Club’ Review: An engaging sports drama on women kabaddi players

While the young women kabaddi players are riveting, the film could have gone easy on the preaching.

KennedyClub_Photo_750

Kollywood News: Director Suseenthiran has given us intense sports films like Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu and Jeeva in the past. His latest Kennedy Club too is a quality addition to this list. The film has Sasikumar, Bharathiraja and Murali Sharma in important roles but the real stars are undoubtedly the young women who give us the intense kabaddi matches.

The film begins with Sasikumar’s god-like voiceover, which we’ve heard plenty of times, explaining the origins of the game. Unsurprisingly, kabaddi is pegged to ‘Tamil’ pride, with also references to jallikattu. “Men practised kabaddi to prepare themselves for the final test of taming the bull aka jallikattu,” says the voiceover.

The only welcome part about Sasikumar’s voiceover is his quick introduction to how the game is played. The film begins with Murugananthan (Sasikumar) training a group of girls on how to play kabaddi. To the audience, he narrates how he reached this point in his life.

Savada Muthu (played by Bharathiraja), Murugananthan’s coach, is now training a women’s kabaddi team, Kennedy Club, from Dindigul. In one of the film’s earliest scene, and its best, Savada Muthu fiercely tells his girls to not spare any of the men who’ve been teasing them from the outside. “Amidst hardships, you’ve come to where you are now. All these taunts should never stop you. You should stop them instead,” he bolsters them.

While last month saw the release of critically acclaimed films like ‘Super Deluxe’ and ‘Kumbalangi Nights’, August too has some interesting choices.

Aadai

Entertainment News: Several new south Indian releases have come to OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime in August. The online streaming giants appear to be keen to expand their content in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, and as a result, more and more films are finding new audiences in legal ways.

While last month saw the release of critically acclaimed films like Super Deluxe and Kumbalangi Nights, August too has some interesting choices.

Some of these releases had a short theatrical run but are critically acclaimed. If you could not catch them in theatres or wish to watch the film again, here’s your chance.

Rustum (Amazon Prime): This Shivarajkumar film released on the OTT platform towards the end of July. Directed by Ravi Varma, the cop flick has a lot to please Shivanna fans but the predictable plot with a flashback quite similar to several other films we’ve seen in the past, did not quite please the critics.

Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya (Amazon Prime): Directed by Swaroop RSJ, this detective film starring Naveen Polishetty and Shruti Sharma has equal parts intrigue and comedy. The film is about unidentified dead bodies which turn up on railway tracks and a little-known detective’s quest to solve the case. The film was hailed as one of the best homegrown detective films to come out in recent times and is all set to become a franchise.
