Viral posts try to pass off a year-old funeral procession of one Tabrez Alam, a henchman killed in Bihar last year, as that of Tabrez Ansari.

tabrez-ansari

Fake News: An eight-month-old funeral video of Tabrez Alam, a sharpshooter from Bihar, is being passed as that of Tabrez Ansari who was tied to an electric pole and beaten to death by a frenzied mob in Jharkhand on June 18, 2019.

Tabrez Ansari was attacked by a mob in Saraikela Kharsawan district of Jharkhand on June 18 on the suspicion of theft.

Gory Video Of A Teenager Hacked To Death In Brazil Passed Off As India

BOOM found that the video is originally from Brazil where a teenager was brutally murdered in 2018.

Brazil-Video-Featured-Fake

Fake News: A gruesome video showing a teenager hacked to death by multiple assailants in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil is viral with a false claim on WhatsApp and social media that it shows a man being lynched in India.

The 47-second long clip shows at least five assailants rain blows on the victim who can be seen on the ground in what appears to be a dump yard.

The men viciously attack the victim with bricks, wooden planks and a pick axe while another records the heinous assault. The attackers appear to be speaking in what sounds like Portuguese.

Despite the distinctly non-Indian facial features and audio, it is being shared in India on WhatsApp and Twitter.

A footnote in Hindi accompanying the video states, “Share this video so much that it reaches Narendra Modi and other ministers by tomorrow; so that these animals are punished. You are not a human being if you don’t get disturbed by watching the video and sharing it!”

‘Quite rare’: Virat Kohli acknowledges Pakistan fans supporting India in game vs England

With Pakistan’s progression dependent on England’s loss, it is understandable that the fans of the otherwise bitter rivals are lending their support to Men in Blue.

Cricket World Cup 2019: Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli acknowledged the support of arch-rival Pakistani fans ahead of India’s World Cup match against England at Edgbaston.

Speaking to presenter Mike Atherton after the toss. Virat said, “Crunch result on the outside as well. So I am sure the fans of the Pakistan team will be supporting us today,” when he was posed a question about it.

Pakistan entered the top 4 in the group stages of the World Cup with a thrilling win over Afghanistan on Saturday. But England can dislodge Pakistan in the top 4 with a win over India. Pakistan needs to win its remaining game against Bangladesh and hope England fails to win one of its matches against India or New Zealand.

Hosts England is currently 8 points after seven games after starting the tournament as favourites.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain had earlier posed the question to Pakistan fans asking who they will be supporting.

In one of the responses, one Indian fan said, “Most Indians are supporting Pakistan today so that England goes out of the WorldCup.In 1947, England divided India and Pakistan. Today they united them.”

One Pakistani supporter even shared a photo of a biker wearing Pakistani jersey with the shirt bearing Virat’s name and… continue reading full story

From Roger Binny to Mitchell Starc: When bowlers helped teams lift the World Cup

On six out of the eight occasions so far, the World Cup-winning side has had a bowler finish with the highest number of wickets in the tournament.

Cricket World Cup 2019: World Cup 2019 is heading for an interesting climax. While Australia is the only team to have confirmed a spot in the semifinals so far, the other three slots are up for grabs. India, New Zealand, Pakistan, England, and Bangladesh are all in the reckoning to make it to the top 4.

While the World Cup was tipped to be a batsman’s paradise, it has been the bowlers who have turned the tables in the tournament. Whether it is Mitchell Starc’s yorker to clean up Ben Stokes or Kuldeep Yadav’s leg-spinner that went through Babar Azam’s defence, bowlers have often managed to win the key moments in a game.

This has been a recurring pattern in World Cup tournaments in years gone by. Do you know how many times a bowler / batsman finished on top of the charts and the team ended up lifting the trophy? Here’s a lookback:

1979 World Cup, England

  • West Indies were the undisputed champions and gunning for a second successive title. They had a shrewd captain in ‘Super Cat’ Clive Lloyd who led from the front. In the final, they trounced England by 92 runs. West Indian opener Gordon Greenidge, who was one of the most feared batsmen of his times, emerged as the top-scorer in the tournament with 253 runs. He scored one hundred and two fifties with a highest  score of 106 at an average of 84.33.

1983 World Cup, England

  • 1983 was a glorious chapter in Indian cricket as the underdogs stunned defending champions West Indies in the final. The team led by Kapil Dev played a fearless brand of cricket that helped them succeed. Defending a paltry total of 183, the Indians bowled the West Indies out for 140 runs. India’s Roger Binny finished as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 18 wickets. His bowling average was 18.66 with an economy rate of 3.81. He finished with best figures of 4 for 29.

‘Rustum’ review: Shiva Rajkumar’s cop film is a predictable, fan-pleasing effort

The film reminds one of many other cop films but Shivanna fans are likely to be pleased by his “mass” role.

rustum_poster

Entertainment News: After a short sabbatical, superstar Dr Shivarajkumar is back in a “mass” role as a cop. The audience has always loved Shivanna more as an upright, merciless cop than a machete-wielding underworld don, especially after delivering hits like Killing VeerappanMufti and Tagaru. With Rustum, Shivanna has gone one step ahead to entertain the audience in multiple avatars.

Always known for sporting clean-shaven looks, in Rustum, he gets a sharp moustache just like his father, the legendary thespian late Dr Rajkumar, and this reminds us a lot of the matinee idol in a few frames. There’s plenty of action, sentiment, a small layer of friendship, revenge and drama. Along the way, there’s plenty of machismo on display.

The movie opens with the murder of an IAS officer. Just as the officer’s parents look up and demand justice from God, Abhi (Shivarajkumar) and his family arrive in Bengaluru. Abhi, his wife Anju (Shraddha Srinath), sister Ammu (Mayuri Kyatari) and his school-going daughter, are a typical middle class family.

All is well until Ammu gets kidnapped one day. Worried, Abhi goes from pillar-to-post in police stations for justice. But, as powerful people are involved, Abhi finds himself targeted instead. But is Abhi who he says he is?

‘Kalki’ review: A smart investigative thriller where story is the hero

The film keeps you interested right through, maintaining an intrigue that is important for investigative thrillers.

KALKI-poster.jpg

Entertainment News: Prasanth Varma (of Awe fame) sets Kalki in the ’80s Telangana village of Kollapuram – bell-bottom pants, radio, mention of India’s World Cup campaign, and an MLA, who habitually rapes brides. At the heart of it is an investigative officer and encounter specialist Kalki (Dr. Rajasekhar), who nonchalantly struts around trying to untie the knots of politics and power in a conspiracy of smuggling, intensified by a few freak incidents.

Kalki keeps you interested right through, maintaining an intrigue that is important for investigative thrillers. It is not your below-the-belt thriller that suddenly creates new revelations to spruce things up in the story. The audience is not only watching, but also trying to untie the knots themselves. That is why at times, the revelations don’t leave you open-mouthed. You have solved it while the officer on scene was chasing clues. Kalki, in other words, sacrifices shock and awe, to keep the audience interested for the most part, and when their conclusions are vindicated at the climax, springs the final surprise – that doesn’t come as a hugely baffling reveal (since we have all watched enough cinema, haven’t we?). But, we still leave the hall satisfied.

Credit to the team that dug out the story for which Kahaniyan has been credited in the opening reel. At the heart of the movie is a dead, good guy (Sidhu as Shekhar Babu), who has allegedly been killed by his political nemesis, while the audience suspects the dead guy’s brother, played by the ominous-looking Ashutosh Rana, who never fails to bring villainy and menace into anything he plays onscreen.

Police say that this is the first judgement of its kind in the country where a juvenile in conflict with law is sentenced to two life imprisonments.

Declared ‘eliminated’ in 2005, why India’s battle against leprosy is far from over

An age-old disease, India had in 2005 declared that there was less than one case of leprosy out of 10,000 people. A decade later, experts realised that leprosy had been largely ignored in the country.

leprosy-delve-750

Telangana News: 10-year-old Lakshmi* was waiting for her turn at the Leprosy Training Centre, Hyderabad, and her mother was desperate for a solution. The hands of the student — who will soon move to Class 5 — have now begun to take the shape of a claw. Her fingers bleed every time she has to write a little more than usual in class and she is sent home. Lakshmi has Hansen’s disease, widely known as leprosy, due to which she has lost the fingertips of her ring and pinky finger.

Lakshmi’s mother, Rama*, a daily wage labourer, ran from pillar to post seeking treatment for her daughter. The leprosy had not been detected or treated in time, which lead to Lakshmi’s disability. And after visiting almost a dozen clinics, they had all told Rama the same thing — her daughter would require surgery for her clawed hand.

The existence of leprosy has been known for over a century, with the bacterial pathogen reportedly identified as early as 1873. However, the disease doesn’t have a vaccine and it takes a long time for it to show visible signs, which can lead to disabilities if not corrected in time. Though there is a cure for the disease, a lack of awareness has turned leprosy patients into social pariahs, bringing hardship to their professional and personal lives.

In 2005, the disease had been declared ‘eliminated’ — a label that can be used when a country has less than one case out of 10,000 people — which meant that the disease wouldn’t be treated as a… continue reading full story

Beware of fake news using Tamil TV channel templates

The news templates of television channels, meant to publish breaking news on social media platforms, are often tampered with to peddle fake news.

FakeNews

Tamil Nadu News: In an era where fake news parading as facts is far too common, media outlets play an important role. However, it is often that these media outlets themselves are targeted by fake news and misinformation campaigns, often without their knowledge. One such phenomenon among Tamil news TV channels involves misusing news templates to peddle fake news.

A news template refers to graphic cards bearing text used by media houses in order to quickly deliver breaking news or current news. This is primarily used on the official social media accounts of news channels. They carry the official logo and names of their official social media handles, just like an official letterhead would. More often than not, these templates are used to relay statements made by leaders and hence, also carry the photos of the leaders being quoted.

However, many Tamil news channels are often the victims of fake news by miscreants who alter their official template to make false claims. The miscreants change the quote by the said leader or alter the news seen on the official template to peddle fake news. In addition to affecting the person being deliberately misquoted, it also damages the credibility of the media outlet in an already charged political landscape. These fake news templates are largely circulated through WhatsApp and… continue reading full story
