Fact Check on Fake News : A video of felling of apple trees in Himachal Pradesh has been shared by multiple Pakistani netizens with false claims that the Indian government is cutting down orchards belonging to Kashmiris.

Jammu and Kashmir was stripped off its special status and Article 370 was abrogated in the state on August 5, 2019 by the Indian government.

The video documents the felling of multiple apple trees, as supervisors and cops oversee the entire process.

The video is viral on Facebook with an Urdu caption which roughly translates to: “Article 370, after capturing the occupied Kashmir, the Indian Modi government has started atrocities and started cutting down the gardens of innocent Kashmiris. Share video more and more and like our Facebook page.”

“A video of the ongoing slaughter of fruit-laden apple trees under the High Court mandated drive to free forest land from encroachers. Thousands of trees have already been felled and a large number of them are to felled under this drive. While it is an appreciable move to free encroached land, the disappearance of thousands of trees in a short period doesn’t sound to be an appropriate move considering the impact on ecology.”

Drowning was the cause of VG Siddhartha’s death: Forensic report concludes

VG Siddartha’s body was recovered about a month ago from the Netravati river near Mangaluru.

Karnataka News: Almost a month after the death of Coffee Day founder VG Siddartha, investigating officials concluded that the entrepreneur took his own life.  The body of the 60-year old, who went missing on July 29 at the Nethravati Bridge in Mangaluru, was found near an ice-plant at Hoige Bazar about 9 km away from the bridge.

The probe into his mysterious death is still underway. However, investigating officials revealed that Siddartha died after he drowned in the river. “Due to submersion in water, the fluid entered the air passages of the body, which put the body into a condition called Asphyxia (deficient supply of oxygen), which subsequently lead to the death,” an official familiar with the report said.

Rescue officials recovered Siddartha’s body over 18-hours after he drowned and a substantial amount of water had entered his lungs, the official added. The medical examination has also ruled out foul play as suspicious injuries were found on his body at the time of recovery.

Speaking to TNM, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr PS Harsha said, “Yes, based on forensic report we can say it’s a case of suicide, but the investigation will continue (on what led him to end hi life) to bring the case into a logical end.”

Neenu_Kevin

Kerala News: On Tuesday, August 27, 2019, the Kottayam Principal Sessions Court announced its landmark judgement convicting 10 persons to double life sentences for the death of Kevin P Joseph. Kevin, a 23-year-old Dalit Christian man, was abducted, murdered and found floating in the Chaliyekara river in Kollam 15 months ago.

But for Neenu, the young woman with whom Kevin was in a relationship, the ordeal is far from over.

The motive behind the gruesome crime was that Kevin and Neenu, a Latin Catholic woman, were in love against the wishes of her family and the young man refused to withdraw. It was shortly after the duo decided to apply to get their marriage registered that he was abducted and murdered on May 28, 2018 by Neenu’s relatives.

For Kevin’s family, especially father Joseph, the judgement comes as a bittersweet victory, the end of a hard fought battle against powerful persons on the other side.

However, if there is one person who has become the symbol of tenacity and strength in the last few months, it is Neenu. The 21-year-old stormed through a treacherous, conflict-ridden path to secure justice for Kevin.

Madras HC summons Deepa and Deepak in hearing regarding Jayalalithaa’s properties

The Court wanted to ascertain the pleas filed on their behalf seeking Letter of Administration (LoA) to manage the properties left behind by Jayalalithaa, including the Poes Garden residence.

Deepa-Jayakumar

Tamil Nadu News: The Madras High Court on Tuesday summoned J Deepa and nephew J Deepak, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s niece and nephew, to the court on Friday to ascertain the pleas filed on their behalf seeking Letter of Administration (LoA) to manage the properties left behind by Jayalalithaa, including the Poes Garden residence Veda Nilayam.

Justices N Kirubakaran and Abdul Quddhose were hearing four separate pleas for administrating Jaya’s properties when they passed this interim order. Two AIADMK members K Pugazhenthi and P Janakiraman, had filed a similar case in the court.

The Hindu Reports that Deepak’s counsel had filed a civil case in the High Court seeking LoA under the Indian Succession Act of 1925. He had also undertaken to settle all debts of his aunt, which he claimed were Rs 40 crore with the Income Tax Department and another Rs 20 crore towards a 1996 bank loan.

In her affidavit, Deepa had alleged that the state government was trying to acquire property worth over Rs 100 crore for a meagre Rs 38 crore.

Meanwhile, the IT Department’s senior standing counsel AP Srinivas, informed the court that it would not be possible for it to assess the value of Jayalalithaa’s properties as directed by the court during the last hearing since they were short of hands and only three surveyors were available.

How a Telangana govt-run school may soon have better sanitation, thanks to Twitter

A government school in Telangana’s Medak town had 2 toilets for 270 girls and none for boys. This, however, may soon change.

mekak_toilet-min

Telangana News: For a government-run school in Telangana to get funds to repair and build new toilets, it seems they must bypass the district administration, get online on social media and tweet out their problems to get the government’s attention quicker. When the Zilla Parishad High School at Ramayanpet in Medak wanted to rebuild their thirty-year-old toilets for girl students, activists took to Twitter for officials to take notice.

The school is in a poor state, says Prashanth Mamidala, who runs the Hyderabad-based Helping Hands Humanity, a non-profit that helps teach school children. Prashanth took to Twitter and tagged state ministers and government officials to highlight the plight of the school.

For the 270 girls studying at the school, there are only 2 toilets that do not have drainage access. The 133 boys at the school do not even have toilets and have to relieve themselves outside the school.

“There are 403 students in the school and the girls use the toilets when it is an emergency, else they have to relieve themselves outside the school like the boys,” says G Prasanna Mani, the headmistress of the school. “I do not know the history as to why the school is still in a bad shape or as to why no efforts were taken in the past to fix it,” she adds. Prasanna joined the school as the headmistress this academic year.

‘Saaho’ review: Prabhas is the saving grace of this weakly written action flick

The casting directors of ‘Saaho’ probably camped at gyms across the world and picked up whoever looked sufficiently bulky.

saaho1.jpg

Tollywood News: Sujeeth’s Saaho, made on a lavish budget of Rs 350 crore, is a big dumb action movie that strains to fulfill every adjective describing the genre. Big? Check. Dumb? VERY. Action? You can see where the money went (not on the writing, no).

Sabu Cyril, who built the kingdom of Mahishmati for Amarendra Baahubali, has built the futuristic Waaji for Saaho – a city that serves as a den for the world’s most dreadful gangsters, who all look like slightly cleaned up extras from the sets of Pirates of the Caribbean.

There’s a battle of succession among the gangster groups of Waaji with Rs 2 lakh crore at stake, and it’s a bunch of Indian cops based in Mumbai who are on their track. Prabhas, who is introduced as undercover cop Ashok Chakravarthy, makes a flashy entrance, swigging a bottle of Old Monk and immediately diving into an elaborate action sequence which also features ostriches, a black panther, and a python. For the record, the scene is not set at the San Diego zoo. If you still feel he isn’t undercover enough, he also drives a specially designed car that supposedly cost the makers over Rs 5 crore. Who wouldn’t buy this subtlety?
