Fact Check on Viral News: A video of a bridge from China is viral on social media with a misleading claim that the road is a new highway connecting China to Pakistan.

The 2.20 minute video is viral on social media with the caption, “China has now opened the 880 km highway linking their country to Pakistan, See what it looks like.”

Fact Check

BOOM ran a Google search for ‘New highway between China and Pakistan’ and did not find any news reports showing the road in the videos. BOOM then carried out reverse image search using a still from the video and found that the footage is from the Ganhaizi Bridge located in Ya’an City in southwest China’s Sichuan province.

The bridge which has been widely covered by media outlets in China is said to be the ‘world’s longest tubular bridge’

An old video of a police crackdown on Congress workers in Chhattisgarh gets a Pakistani twist.

Fact Check on Fake News: A video showing police personnel lathicharge Indian National Congress (Congress) workers in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh in September last year is going viral on Facebook as Congress workers beaten up for chanting ‘Pakistan zindabad’ at a protest.

The 29 second clip which shows police rain down blows on Congress workers as they are herded into a police van, is being shared by multiple Facebook users.

Fact Check

BOOM broke up the video into key frames and did reverse image search. The search showed that the video was from a police crackdown of a protest by Congress workers in Chhattisgarh on September 18, 2018.

52 party workers were arrested while seven suffered injuries according to a Press Trust of India report.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi had also tweeted the video criticising then Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh.

None of the news reports have any mention of Congress workers shouting ‘Pakistan zindabad’ as the reason for the crackdown.

According to news reports Congress workers were protesting against the remarks of industries minister Amar Agrawal where he allegedly referred to the party as “kachra” or garbage.

ज्ञात रहे की फोटोशॉप किये गए इस ट्वीट में दरअसल गाँधी परिवार को टारगेट करने की कोशिश की जा रही है। ‘एक गाँधी मरा , हज़ारों हिन्दू काट दिए’ से यहाँ इशारा भारत के पहले प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरू पर है। ‘दूसरा गाँधी मरा, हज़ारों सिख जला दिए’ से इशारा भारत की पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गाँधी पर है। ‘तीसरा गाँधी मरा, हज़ारों तमिल मार दिए’ से इशारा पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गाँधी पर है।

No, This Video Does Not Show BJP Workers Getting Injured Burning An Effigy Of Rahul Gandhi

Viral post claims that protesters seen in the video are BJP workers trying to set fire to effigy of Rahul Gandhi.

Fake News India: A three year old video of a few Congress workers injured whilst burning an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been shared on Facebook, albeit, with a twist.

The viral post claims that the group of protesters setting the effigy ablaze are member of Bharatiya Janta Party, and the effigy is that of Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

The video, shared over 4300 times from the profile of one Rajender Singh, has a caption which reads, “Bhakts who were trying to burn an effigy of Rahul Gandhi for calling ‘chowkidar’ a ‘chor’, ended up burning themselves.

Here is the Fact check:

A reverse image search on a screengrab from the video led BOOM to several media reports about this incident that took place in December of 2015.

The video is from Shimla, and the protesters seen setting fire to the effigy are members of Himachal Pradesh unit of the Congress. The incident took place on December 14, 2015, when a group of Congress workers were protesting at the deputy commissioner’s office as part of state-wide protests over the National Herald issue.

In a bid to set fire to an effigy of Modi, a worker flicked the lighter exactly when someone was pouring fuel over the effigy. A ball of flame rose and as many as five Congress workers sustained injuries, with one of them sustaining critical burn injuries.

China’s 50,000 Jobs Per Day Vs India’s 450: Fact checking Rahul Gandhi’s Claim

Available data does not seem to support Rahul Gandhi’s statement pertaining to job creation in India and China.

FactCheck India: In this video, as he is dining and conversing with a group of young adults in their twenties, he states that there exists a scarcity of jobs in India and gives the following figures:

  1. China produces 50,000 jobs every 24 hours
  2. India produces 450 jobs every 24 hours

However, Gandhi makes no mention of any timeframe or the source from which these figures have been taken.

BOOM looks at recently available data on employment to corroborate these claims.

  1. China should be creating 18.25 million jobs a year: 50,000 x 365
  2. India should be creating 164,250 jobs a year: 450 x 365

  • According to another report, Yin Weimin, Minister of Human Resources and Social Security in China stated that 65 million jobs have been created in China in 5 years ending in 2017, which averages to 13 million jobs a year – a little more than 35,600 jobs per day.

Why is Rajeev Kumar, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, under CBI scanner?

The CBI suspects that Rajeev Kumar, the then head of the special investigation team (SIT) responsible for probing the Sarada scam, is in possession of crucial documents which he had seized during the investigation. After the Supreme Court’s directive, CBI had asked Rajeev Kumar to submit a few documents which were missing from the ones given to them by the SIT. However, even after repeated summons by CBI, Rajeev Kumar refused to present himselfbefore the agency after which the central agency reached his residence to question him.

CBI took over the case after the Supreme Court’s order in 2014. They had written to the Director General of Police, WB, Virendra in August, 2018, regarding the appearing of SIT members, who were investigating the chit fund scam before CBI stepped in. However, none of the officials of SIT showed up for CBI questioning. The SIT was formed by Mamata Banerjee in 2013 to probe into the Saradha scam. Later, the Apex Court transferred the investigation process to the CBI.
