Kashmiri Website Falls For Satire Claiming CIA Issued Posthumous Apology To Osama Bin Laden

Fact Check India: Kashmir Pen, a weekly newspaper operating from Srinagar, republished a fictional article by US satire website The Onion about the CIA issuing a posthumous apology to slain terrorist Osama Bin Laden.

The article, which has been reproduced from theonion.com, goes on to mention how the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had erroneously rushed to conclude that Osama Bin Laden, founder of the global terrorist organization al-Qaeda, was the mastermind of 9/11 attacks.

Kashmir Pen carried the story under the category ‘International’ on its website. It even states the source of the article as The Onion.

The Onion’s piece also includes fictional and made up quotes of CIA director Gina Haspel rendering an emotional apology to Bin Laden’s family after new evidence conclusively cleared the former Al Qaeda leader of any involvement whatsoever. It further states the CIA has offered to his family $18 million as restitution for his death.

The satire story also claimed the CIA was now operating under the assumption that Zacarias Moussaoui acted alone in perpetrating the events of 9/11.

इस खबर को धड़ल्ले से सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल किया जा रहा है। फ़ेसबुक पर क़ाफी पेजेस पर इस पोस्ट को शेयर किया गया है।

इस ‘फ़ेक न्यूज़’ को वायरल इन इंडिया द्वारा भी शेयर किया गया है। इस पोस्ट को फ़ेसबुक पर ‘सोनीया गाँधी आयरन लेडी’ नामक पेज पर 2000 से ज़्यादा शेयर्स मिले है।

बूम ने करीना के पी.आर.ओ के माध्यम से जाना की इन खबरों में कोई सच्चाई नहीं है। उन्हें इस बारे में कांग्रेस से कोई संपर्क नहीं किया गया है ।उनका फ़ोकस फिलहाल सिर्फ और सिर्फ फिल्में हैं।

MS Dhoni Joining Congress? No, That’s Bad Photoshop

The viral posts claim that the former Indian cricket team captain is considering contesting election on a Congress ticket.

Fact Check

Boom News: A reverse image search on the viral post shared on Facebook page Congress Party directed BOOM to several news reports carrying the same image.

These articles from 2007 report that the image was taken during a meeting between the players of the T20 Indian cricket team and the then Congress president.

What was the occasion?

It was in the September of 2007 that the Indian cricket team had defeated Pakistan to become world champions in the Twenty20 World Cup held in South Africa.

On October 30, the T20 squad, led by Dhoni, had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, President Pratibha Patil and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi. During the meet, Dhoni had also gifted an autographed cricket bat to the Congress president. You can read more on the meeting here.

While one can clearly see cricketer S Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan standing right behind Gandhi in the original photo, Khan has been cropped out and Sreesanth shoddily photoshopped in the image shared with the viral post.

Direct Bank Transfers Worth Rs 2.30 lakhs Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana?: A FactCheck

A social media post claims that Rs 2.30 lakhs of home loan subsidy has been received as direct bank transfer. We examine if it i s true.

Boom News: A viral WhatsApp message, which has been recently picked up by other social media, praises Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his contributions to the Indian middle class. The message claims the Modi government has provided direct bank transfers of Rs 2.3 lakhs as home loan subsidy under the PM Awas Yojana.

The post came with a screenshot of a tweet, which in turn had a screenshot of what looks like a banking app with it’s ‘payments’ page open. The page listed down a number of transfers, with one transfer amounting to Rs 2.3 lakhs in particular being highlighted.

The original post claims that the Rs 2.3 lakhs was received in the bank account as a direct bank transfer for a home loan subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, a ‘housing for all’ scheme.

However, on scrutinizing the screenshot well, we found no indication as to who made the transfer and for what purpose – details that are usually provided by a bank in their apps and online banking portals. Furthermore, the transfer was made through a cheque payment.

We compared the contents of the screenshot with the guidelines of the housing scheme, to find out if it is possible to avail a direct bank transfer of Rs 2.3 lakhs in your bank account through a cheque payment.

BJP Attracts 16 Times More Donations Than Congress

Data from the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) shows the BJP leads on almost all monetary metrics.

Boom News: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the richest national political party and as the top choice in terms of attracting funding, according to data released by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR).

The party recieved 16 times the total donation of the Indian National Congress at ₹437 crores in FY 2017-2018 and earned five times the income of the Congress at ₹1027 crores.

These numbers comes from data released by ADR, a non-profit, monitors political parties’ declarations to the Election Commission of India (ECI), whose reports can be found here and here.

Declaration Regulations of Funding For Political Parties

Political parties utilise their income to cover operational costs and for election expenditure. They are able to raise funds from:

  • Individuals
  • Corporate entities
  • Foreign bodies

As per current regulation, political parties are required to report all the donations received above ₹20,000 to the ECI. Companies cannot make donations that are more than 7.5% of their net profits, they must be three years old or more since registration and need to declare all donations in their profit and loss statement.

Viral Pic Takes Line From Mamata Banerjee’s Speech Out Of Context

‘Imaan ka naam hai Musalman’ but Mamata Banerjee also had this to say about Hindus, Christians and Sikhs.

Boom News: A screenshot showing Mamata Banerjee with the words ‘Imaan ka naam hai Musalman’ is being shared online with misleading context that the West Bengal chief minister only spoke about Muslims during her opposition unity rally over the weekend.

The screenshot is from the LIVE broadcast of the United India Rally, held at the Brigade Parade grounds (Kolkata) on January 19, 2019.

The image is now viral on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter with the narrative of ‘minority appeasement’ by the chief minister.

Twitter user Gaurav Pradhan , who is followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also shared the image. BOOM has busted Pradhan several times in the past for sharing misinformation.

However, Banerjee also mentioned people of other faiths and not just Muslims. The image was also debunked by India Today.

The line has been carefully used from Banerjee’s speech from the Brigade ground rally.

सच्चाई: सयुंक्त अरब अमीरात का दौरा करने के बाद कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष राहुल गाँधी ना तो किसी विशेष विमान से भारत लौटे है और ना ही अमीरात में पहली बार गांधी के लिए कोई प्रोटोकॉल तोडा गया हैं ।

सच्चाई: यह तस्वीर दरअसल दो तस्वीरो का कोलाज है जिसे फ़ोटोशॉप किया गया है। इस तस्वीर के साथ कैप्शन में लिखा है: ‘तब आर.एस.एस वाले अंग्रेज़ो को सलाम ठोंकते थे।’ दो अलग-अलग तस्वीरें सुपरइंपोज़ कर के सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल की जा रही हैं। हालांकि अपने आप में ये दोनों तस्वीरें असली हैं मगर इन्हे सुपरइंपोज़ कर के बनाया गया यह पोस्ट फ़ेक है | ।
