5 Crore Bangladeshi And Rohingya Inflitrators Living Illegally In India?

In a tweet that has gone viral, a Delhi based lawyer claims 5 crore Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants are living in the country.

BoomLive News: Prashant Patel Umrao, a Delhi based lawyer, recently made some bold claims over Twitter that has gathered a lot of attention. In his tweet, Umrao, who goes by his Twitter name @ippatel, stated that there are 5 crore Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators living in India illegally.

In less than 2 days, it was retweeted more than 1,600 times and liked more than 3,000 times. This is not the first time Patel has made claims that have been later found to be blatantly false or misleading.

Lack of accurate government data

For over a decade, there seems to be a clear issue with both past and present governments regarding their data on illegal immigrants in India. Union Home ministers have been known to quote figures based on hearsay rather than actual studies or surveys.

On July 15, 2004, under the Congress led UPA government, Sriprakash Jaiswal, the then Minister of State for Home Affairs , reportedly stated in response to a question at the Rajya Sabha that 1.2 crore illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were living in India.

Following an uproar over his statement, he later retracted it, stating that, “the reported figures were not based on any comprehensive or sample study but were based on hearsay and that too from interested parties. Therefore, no realistic figures can be given for illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Assam.”

Beer is a party season favorite and my top pick from the party season is definitely the beers by Gateway Brewing Co.

Having begun as a home brewing hobby by one of the founders Navin Mittal (in 2006) became a company in 2011. Founders Navin Mittal , Rahel Mehra and Krishna Naik are all passionate about brewing. They Started with the sole objective of using local ingredients to make some delicious classic style beer.

The Apple Cider is a personal favorite. Made from the Lal Ambri apples from Kashmir , this cider is yellow golden in color. The sweetness and and the tart notes of the beer make it absolutely delicious. Warm and fruity this is the perfect winter drink, making it our Midweek Crush for this week.

Making New Year Resolutions

Why indeed make New Year resolutions? Timepass party conversation? Validation?
Mine is the gluten-free version.

India Food Network: The prominent psychiatrist and bestselling author of Games People Play has this to say about resolutions: (I paraphrase and cite a food-related example). If resolutions are made before the fact (this is the last time I shall eat chocolate cake for breakfast. I’ll eat an apple instead), they risk being broken.

If the announcement is made after the fact (it has been six months since I’ve eaten chocolate cake for breakfast. I now eat an apple), it’s a project. The chocolate-at-breakfast-eating person has made the change.

What I infer from it is this: Don’t talk about it. Do it and then talk about it.

Which has me pondering why we talk about it in the first place. I have just eaten a humongous piece of a Theobroma grain-free chocolate cake and ponder away I must. I owe it to my 2018 self, the guilty, indisciplined, reckless self who ate too many bad gluten-free things all year long.

Why indeed make New Year resolutions? Timepass party conversation? Validation? A legitimate platform to share one’s innermost thoughts, fears and desires, my buddies and I wonder as we draw up a list. We limit it to ten points. Easier to stick to, we decide. Mine is the gluten-free version.

We wish ourselves luck and a joyous 2019.
